vato / cholo

Erik wants to know the difference between a vato and cholo. He had his shirt buttoned like some guys in high school used to, top button only. Urban dictionary is telling me that vato is neutral and cholo implies gang affiliation? Oh, I forgot ese.

I've wanted to know these for a long time as they often end up in movies and sometimes comics.

What did we ever do before the Urban Dictionary!

Here are my definitions (with experience including growing up Mexican-American in the 60s and 70s)

Ese: A friend; fellow Chicano or Mexican

Chicano: A person who is American but very proud of his/her Mexican roots

Vato: A Chicano or Mexican with a bad reputation
Cholo: Low-rider (or one who hung out with low-riders) that dressed in a low-rider fashion: black or tan baggy khakis, white t-shirt with a plaid long sleeve shirt that had just the top button buttoned up, a bandanna around his forehead or wrist or hanging out his back pocket and Ray Ban type sunglasses, might wear a hat or might have tattoos.

    Awesome, Anon.

Doesn't that Vato garb get really hot in LA? I was there in late Oct. once and it was super hot. I imagine the plaid long sleeve shirt is murder.

When it gets hot you take your plaid shirt off and wore just the white t-shirt - short sleve or sleveless, tank top style.
